CARE 2027

Community Actuarial Real-World Experience

McMaster University, January 4 - February 13, 2027

The Community Actuarial Real-World Experience (CARE) is a case study competition hosted by the McMaster University Science Careers & Experience Centre (SCCE) and Actuarial Notes that challenges undergraduate and graduate students to solve a real-world risk management problem.
  1. In teams of 2-4, undergraduate and graduate students will have one month to prepare an analysis of the provided case study problem.
  2. During the competition, each team will be provided instructions, a data package, and support in the form of mentorship and workshops.
  3. The Top 3 teams will be selected by a panel of expert judges and present their work at the Closing Ceremonies.

Hamilton, Ontario faces a uniquely complex flood risk profile. Situated at the western tip of Lake Ontario and bisected by the Niagara Escarpment, the city confronts interwoven flood hazards, including rapid escarpment runoff, shoreline flooding, and sewer system overflows during heavy rain events. Climate change is intensifying each of these risks, driving the city’s ongoing investment in flood resilience.

  • How large and variable are the financial losses Hamilton can expect from flood events?
  • Are the city and its most vulnerable residents adequately insured against them?
  • How do these exposures change under plausible climate scenarios through 2050?
